to the Permaculture  Research  Institute of Barbados

WELCOME

A Permaculture Research Institute (PRI):  is a center for the demonstration and education of sustainability. They are internationally recognized centers set up to both demonstrate sound design in a specific region and climate of the world, and populate the local and global community with sustainable leaders and permaculture designers.

Our PRI, The Caribbean Permaculture Research Institute of Barbados, is a non-profit organization providing the demonstration and education of permaculture in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Walkers Reserve, WIRRED (Walkers Institute for Regererative Research Education and Design) and Slow Food Barbados. Through these, and other NGO and CSO private-public partnerships we strive to make a difference.

Together we educate and empower our students to:

  • Grow food, repair land and build community

  • Find and create a livelihood based on meeting one’s own needs, and helping others meet their needs

  • Create low maintenance, holistic and functional systems to feed, house and provide income

WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?

grow food

repair land

build community

Permaculture is a design science, inspired by nature and guided by ethics. Its purpose is to meet the needs of humanity while benefiting the environment. To this end, we empower individuals, local communities and the larger public to build sustainable & environmentally friendly:

Food and Land Systems

Social and community systems

Shelter and home systems

Livelihood and business systems

By designing systems of connectivity and by re-skilling to meet our needs we can relate to each other and land in functional, healthy and meaningful ways. Living and working within these systems of abundance we can save money, enjoy comfort and meet our needs in an efficient and resilient way

OUR MISSION:

'To work with individuals and communities local & worldwide, and to expand the knowledge and practice of integrated, sustainable agriculture and culture using the whole-systems approach of permaculture design.’

IT'S OUR VISION TO:

‘Be a catalyst for environmental stewardship, sustainable & regenerative farming practices, food security & self-reliance, and community resilience in urban and rural environments.’

  1. Create self-replicating demonstration sites which spread permaculture education worldwide. These sites will empower local individuals and communities to create food and water resiliency, thriving local economies and sustainable livelihoods.

  2. Create a network of Permaculture graduates that lead their communities to achieve ecological and economical harmony.

  3. Foster a culture which thrives on building food security, regenerative farming and development practices, and efficient and resilient communities.
